Adobe Collective

The Adobe Collective is a musical project based in 29 Palms, CA which is in a corner of the Mojave desert of Southern California just outside of Joshua Tree. Following a crowdfunding campaign that fully paid for CD and vinyl copies of their self titled debut album, they appeared in many versatile live performance styles —from intimate duo acoustic performances at small local venues; to rowdy roadhouse band sets at the world famous Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace; all the way up to an 8-piece band on the main stage at the Joshua Tree Music festival.

The latest album Take Heart, Take Care was already in the works by the time the debut was released and one listen reveals that the new songs have depth that comes from daily life in the desert tempered by serious time in the recording studio. The album was recorded at High Lonesome Studio in Joshua Tree and while still rooted in roots/folk sensibility with a focus on lush vocal harmonies, there are also new elements of country, rock, and even brief forays into psychedelia.

Musical highlights on the new album include Tamarisk, a piece with complex vocal harmonies that crescendos into a driving beat with rich instrumentation. Nothing There (Honestly) is built on heartfelt lyrics and sweet vocal harmonies with a musical bridge that feels like a cinematic widescreen desert landscape. WONDERLUST is the band’s most epic song to date—basically three songs in one. A rhythmic start leads into velvety verses layered with tremolo laden guitar harmonics, then to wide open space with reverb washed whistling, and ends with a climax of resounding vocals over distorted, gritty guitar.

This album, along with well-attended local shows, has brought the group some local attention. They have been mentioned in Desert Magazine, Palm Springs Life Magazine, and were featured in Coachella Valley Weekly. In addition, the album was nominated for Best Unsigned Album of the Year by Coachella Valley Weekly, and included in The Desert Sun newspaper’s list of 20 Albums to Discover the High Desert Sound alongside artists like Gram Parsons, Queens of the Stone Age, and Cracker.

Rick Shelley
Rick Shelley

Americana singer-songwriter Rick Shelley began playing and writing music as a teenager. Throughout his 20s and 30s he was a part of two moderately successful bands, RagTag in Los Angeles and Woodshed in the Coachella Valley.

During the RagTag, years, he was the charismatic frontman, reinforced by guitarist James Danielson, drummer Eric Turner and bassist Nick Oliveri. Their sound comfortably sandwiched between the gritty Glam-Metal of Guns N’ Roses and the serpentine Punk of Jane’s Addiction.

Woodshed featured nearly the same line-up as RagTag, the only difference being Dean Oliveri on bass. This time out, Rick split vocal duties with James and played rhythm guitar. Their sound, inspired by disparate influences like Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Grateful Dead was rough-hewn, rustic and Bluesy.

Woodshed had an incredible 12 year run, touring throughout Southern California and recording three well received albums. Although they never really broke up, the band went on hiatus in 2004.

10 years went by in the blink of an eye, after a decade spent concentrating on kids and family, Rick emerged as a solo artist in 2014. He quietly began booking shows throughout the desert. A prolific writer, he amassed over 30 new songs in a six-month period.

In the summer of 2015 Rick connected with multi-instrumentalist, producer Chris Unck, (Pink, Butch Walker, Black Roses), and headed into Unck’s High Lonesome recording studio in Joshua Tree. Paring his 30 songs down to six favorites, they co-produced Rick’s debut EP, “1909 Miles,” which arrived in November of that year. The pair have continued to work together and Rick released the EP’s follow up “Hope Wrapped in Razor Wire” in March of 2017.

Rick’s sound has earned favorable comparisons to Ryan Adams and Steve Earle. A richly evocative storyteller, his songs employ an economy of language that recall Texas troubadours like Robert Earl Keen and Guy Clark. He shares his hard-won wisdom with pathos, humor and grace. Every narrative accompanied by indelible melodies and killer hooks.
